On the Care of Mind in Buddhism——Ming Sheng

2009年04月27日 13:16:00 佛教在线 点击:0

Abstract: Buddism assumes it as its responsibility to heal the problems of mind. The general aim of all the Buddhist canons is to convey to the people its way of delivery from suffering. The belief that “ the mind, the Buddha, and all sentient beings, the three are no different” assumes that all people are endowed with Buddhahood and, therefore, have the possibility of self healing. The Buddhist assertion that “ you shall have no attachment and the pure mind would be present” implies that the power for mind healing is not from without, but from within. The emphasis on the eternity and essentiality of self by the Platform Sutra suggests that the key to mind care lies in the perspevtive of self enlightenment. If people are enlightened to the nature of mind and are able to deal with the milliard of matters, they shall live a pure and happy spiritual life.

Keywords: Buddhist thought mind care pure mind

Man kind in modern times have to face physical or mental afflictions due to the insecurity, uncertainty and information influx in modern society as well as the tension, perplexity and pressure of jobs. Collaps of faith, bankrucy of ethics, spiritual emptiness, psychological frustration have become serious social problems, and the care of mind will be one of the major issues of human civilization in the 21th century. Buddha Sakyamuni had deeply perceived the pain of people, and preached for forty five years after his enlightenment on the origin of sufferring and the way to be delivered. As his sole purpose is to heal the pain of man, particularly the pain of mind, Buddhism is also called the religion of mind care. All of te canons thus formed are the derectary for people to achieve this purpose. This paper is intended to discuss some of the Buddhist theories and methods of practice in healing the problems of mind in modern times so that people’ life and their spiritual quality can be improved.

I.The desolation of mind in modern times

It has been mankind’s endeavor to have a happy and beautiful life ever since the course of history started, but the suffering of man keeps increasing despite the advance of technology and material abundance. Bribery, drug dealing, prostitution and so on spred like cancer.; the rate of divorce, suicide, crime rise up every year; terrorist events continue to happen; restlessness, fatigue, indifference, alienation between man and nature, etc., are the symptoms of the day; cases of mental anxiety, insomnia, psychosis are becoming more and more popular. Egoism, utilitarianism, hedonism are rampant through the world, and the lose of ethics, the collaps of faith, the imbalance of values present themselves as worldwide problems. All these problems are obviously resulted from man’s blind pursuit which deprives from them the spiritual ability to resist the various external problems. The indulgence into material consumption and the desolation of our spiritual home have led to the wilderness of mind in our days.

The desperate prusuit of profit, the one-sided emphasis on economic development turn people to be interest-minded. Egoism prvails. “Self” has become the center, which expands gradually to be my family, my friends ,my company, and futher to be my society, my society, my nation, and my world. Asa result, our life as well as our way of of thinking narrow down. Furthermore, fame and interest have become the major concern in life. Fortune and title are considered more important than one’s own siritual quality. People sometimes even pack themselves as a comodity. Examples are the marriage commercials which appear in recent years in some of the famous media of the country. The expensive commercials, sponsored by some millionares to invite girlfriends, reveal a distorted sentiment that pure love could be purhased by money. Is it to seek love or just to show off? Experts believe that it is only a nassistic satisfaction.
