Enquiry about Good and Greatness

沙門問佛。何者為善。何者最大。
A monk asked the Buddha: "What is good, and what is great?"

佛言。行道守真者善。志與道合者大。
The Buddha answered: "Good is to practise the Way and to follow the truth. Great is the heart that is in accord with the Way."

Commentary: Enquiry about Good and Greatness


When it comes to Mahayana learning, the Bodhi spirit should be the core of our aspiration so that our cultivation can be aligned with the Way. Great Master Ou Yi said: “Cultivation with mere aspiration but not action is analogous to a person who has no legs, and cultivation with mere action but not aspiration is analogous to a blind person who lacks a guide.” Therefore all cultivation should be initiated by aspirations. A true Bodhi cultivator is one who has no fear of samsara, and he is also not willing to quit samsara because he wants to stay with sentient beings to relieve them. For example, the Brahmajala Sutta mentioned that Sakyamuni Buddha had come to the Saha World for eight thousand times already. It follows that Sakyamuni Buddha had attained Buddhahood long ago, but he still returned to the Saha World to spare sentient beings.
学习大乘佛法,发心应该以菩提心为本,才能与道相应。蕅益大师说:“有愿无行,如人无足。有行无愿, 如盲无导。”一切的修学都应该以愿为先导。一位真正发菩提心的行者,他不害怕轮回,也不舍轮回,因为他要回到众生身边度化他们。例如《梵网经》中就说到释迦牟尼佛来此娑婆世界已经八千返。由此可见释尊早已成佛,但祂不舍众生所以要重回娑婆。

Let’s also take a look at how Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva had made his vows; Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva’s vows are: “Until the hells are emptied, I vow not to become a Buddha; Only after all sentient beings are relieved, will I myself attain Bodhi.” Bodhisattva’s vows are full of compassion, loving kindness, and Bodhi spirit. He had given first priority to sentient beings and left himself behind. Even though the hells are not yet emptied, Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva had become a Buddha long ago because his spirit of aspiration had been perfected.
再来看看地藏菩萨是怎么发愿。地藏菩萨的愿是“地狱不空,誓不成佛,众生度尽,方证菩提”。菩萨发的愿充满着慈悲及菩提心,祂把众生放在第一位,把自己放在后面。即使地狱尚未空,但地藏菩萨早已成佛了,因为祂的愿心已经圆满。
