Queries on Strength and Wisdom
A monk asked the Buddha: "What is most powerful, and what is most illuminating?"
The Buddha said: "Meekness is most powerful, for it harbors no evil thoughts, and, moreover, it is restful and full of strength.
As it is free from evils, it is sure to be honored by all.
"The most illuminating is a mind which is thoroughly cleansed of dirt, and which, remaining pure, retains no blemishes.
From the time when there was yet no-heaven and earth till the present day, there is nothing in the ten quarters which is not seen, or known, or heard by such a mind, for it has gained all-knowledge, and for that reason it is called 'illuminating."

Commentary:Queries on strength and wisdom
Meekness, or patience means abiding in a state of stillness. It is literally an ability of composure. Buddhist sutra said monastics rely on patience as the source of strength. Such patience encompasses avoidance of desire under favourable circumstances and avoidance of abomination under adversity. For example, when followers provide you with fine offerings, it is the power of patience that bars you from being covetous. Also when you are being humiliated by others, it is the power of patience that dispels your hatred. In addition, hot and cold weather, thirst, and hunger are all within the scope of patience. After all, the most prestigious form of patience is the ability to abide our mind in the truth which is neither arising nor ceasing, and this is called the patience with the non-production of dharmas. It follows that the power of patience is so strong that it can convert others, and a person who can demonstrate patience has the virtue of magnanimity.
According to the Diamond Sutra, in the past King Kalinga once misunderstood that a Ksantyrsi had affairs with his women. As a consequence he mutilated the Ksantyrsi’s body, in the course of which, however, the Ksantyrsi developed no anger. Because of such power of patience, Ksantyrsi’ mutilated body restored to the original state, and he vowed that upon attainment of Buddhahood, he would deliver King Kalinga from sufferings first. Note that the Ksantyrsi later became Buddha Sakyamuni, and King Kalinga later became Kaundinya, who was one of the first disciples being relieved by Buddha Sakyamumi after attaining Buddhahood.
